Music at Heronsgate:
" A high quality music education should engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement." (The National Curriculum)
At Heronsgate, music is an essential part of school life, offering every pupil an inclusive and inspiring education that nurtures a lifelong love of music. Our spiral curriculum develops musical skills progressively, from basic rhythm and listening in Lower Key Stage 2 to advanced composition, performance, and music technology by Year 6.
Weekly lessons follow the Sing Up scheme and are tailored to reflect pupils’ interests. Instrumental learning features prominently, with opportunities such as the WCET Brass Orchestral Project and preparatory percussion units, while Year 6 pupils use iPads and GarageBand to explore modern music technology.
We celebrate cultural diversity by including music from around the world, with songs in multiple languages and composers from a wide range of backgrounds to ensure every child feels represented. Our lessons are adapted to support all learners using visual aids, scaffolded tasks, and technology, ensuring full participation and enjoyment.
Partnerships with the other IFtL schools and the Milton Keynes Music Hub provide rich performance opportunities and community connections. Music at Heronsgate fosters creativity, cultural awareness, and personal growth, making it a valued subject that supports pupils’ development and future aspirations.
Instrumental Opportunities
Children can take part in musical instrument lessons delivered by specialist teachers. These lessons offer a chance to learn everything from piano and guitar to brass and strings, depending on availability and interest. Please get in touch if you are in receipt of Pupil Premium as funding is available to support your child's musical pathway. Please email enquiries@heronsgateschool.co.uk marking your email 'FAO: Mrs Walton - Instrument Lessons'
We’re also proud to host Rock Steady, a programme that gives children the chance to form their own bands, rehearse together, and perform in front of an audience—an unforgettable experience that nurtures teamwork and creativity.
School Choir (Here 2 Sing)
Our school choir, H2S, meets weekly and is open to all children who love to sing. The choir performs at school events and in the wider community, giving pupils a chance to shine and share their voices with pride.
