Our History Curriculum:
At Heronsgate School, history plays a central role in our curriculum. Topic drivers allow the children to experience history lessons in an immersive and creative manner. We utilise the Cornerstones curriculum, a nationally recognised thematic approach to the teaching of history that is linked to the National Curriculum. As a result, our history curriculum is sequenced in a logical manner, building on skills and knowledge as the children progress between year groups. Where possible, links are made with other subjects to allow children to consolidate their learning and spoken language.
History Policy 2023-24
Heronsgate - History Subject Policy 2023-24
Aims:
Our curriculum aims to inspire, motivate and challenge children to appreciate the past and human achievements. Doing so empowers them to understand how people and events from the past help to shape the modern world in which we live. It also allows children to respect the values and traditions of other cultures and societies from around the world. The Cornerstones curriculum allows children to develop a knowledge of chronology, compare different times and places and encourages enquiry and questioning.
Trips and Visits:
At Heronsgate School, we understand that bringing history to life is essential for children to fully understand the world around them and enjoy and appreciate history in all its forms. From Duxford to Hampton Court, the children experience a wide range of historical locations from Years 3 to 6.

Knowledge Organisers and Glossaries 2023-24
Our knowledge organisers are useful tools used by both parents and students alike. The knowledge organisers allow the children to view the most important and useful knowledge in their project allowing them to make links and ensure that the key information is stored in their long term memory. The children will re-visit many of the tier 3 words (words that only occur in specific domains) on their knowledge organisers throughout their history and reading lessons. Why not print one out and use it at home to consolidate your child's learning?
