Welcome to Year 3

We are delighted to welcome you to Year 3 at Heronsgate School. This year group is made up of three classes:

  • Nightingales – Miss Ash
  • Wrens – Mr Bowskill
  • Sparrows – Miss Viveiros

Children in Year 3 follow a structured daily timetable. Core subjects—English, mathematics and reading—are taught each morning. Foundation subjects, including art and history, take place in the afternoons. As part of Key Stage 2, pupils are introduced to a broad curriculum with a strong focus on developing subject knowledge and vocabulary over time.

Spring Term Overview

Mathematics We follow the White Rose scheme. This term, pupils will explore:

  • Multiplication and Division
  • Length and perimeter
  • Fractions
  • Times tables covered this term include 2, 3, 4, 8, 5 and 10.

Reading We will continue to develop our reading skills, focussing on retrieval and inference. We will focus on our core texts: The Firework Makers' Daughter and Night Sky Dragons

Project Work Our this term is 'Rocks, Relics and Rumbles'. This project teaches children about the features and characteristics of Earth’s layers, including a detailed exploration of volcanic, tectonic and seismic activity.

Key topic words this term include:

  • Igneous — rock formed from cooled magma or lava
  • Sedimentary — rock created from compressed layers of sediment
  • Metamorphic — rock transformed by heat and pressure
  • Seismic — relating to earthquakes or vibrations within the Earth
  • Stratigraphy — the study of rock layers and their order

PE Days

  • Wrens – Tuesday and Friday
  • Nightingales – Thursday and Friday
  • Sparrows – Monday and Thursday

Reading Information

Each child will be assessed and given a reading book suited to their level. Further details about our reading curriculum can be found in the Reading section of this website.

Please read for 10 minutes each day and record this in your child's reading record.
