Aims of Forest School

Forest School aims to nurture confident, resilient, and independent learners through meaningful experiences in the natural environment. Children are encouraged to explore, take appropriate risks, and develop problem‑solving skills in a setting that promotes curiosity and creativity. The approach supports emotional wellbeing, teamwork, and a deep connection with the outdoors, helping children understand their role as responsible stewards of the natural world and helping underpin the Heronsgate Way.

Intent

Our Forest School provision is designed to enrich the curriculum by offering hands‑on, child‑led learning opportunities that cannot be replicated in the classroom. We aim to develop children’s self‑esteem, communication skills and sense of achievement through purposeful outdoor activities. By embedding Forest School into our wider curriculum, we ensure that every child has the opportunity to experience nature in a structured yet exploratory way. Over the course of their Forest School sessions, children may make items from natural items, light fires or build bigger structures. Of course, we always end a unit of work with Hot Chocolate heated on the outdoor fire!

Implementation

All year groups receive one half‑term of Forest School each year, delivered in our purpose‑built outdoor learning area. Sessions are led by our trained Forest School leaders, Lis Wilkes and Kerry Blackbourn, who create a safe, engaging environment. Some children also receive additional Forest School sessions as part of our intervention offer, enabling targeted support for wellbeing, confidence, communication or social development. Alongside our core provision, we run a Junior Park Rangers programme in partnership with the Milton Keynes Parks Trust. Our Junior Rangers have taken part in conservation activities across parks throughout Milton Keynes, helping to care for local green spaces and learning about environmental responsibility.

Impact

Forest School has a significant impact on children’s personal development. Pupils demonstrate increased confidence, improved teamwork, and greater resilience when faced with challenges. The outdoor environment also supports emotional regulation and wellbeing, giving children space to reflect, collaborate and thrive. Our Junior Park Rangers contribute positively to the wider community, developing pride in their local environment and a sense of civic responsibility, sharing their work in assemblies (and of course our school newsletter).

The Herons’ Partnership

Our Forest School provision is a shared strength across Heronshaw and Heronshill, welcoming children from all year groups in both schools. This collaborative approach builds a strong sense of community, helping pupils form connections beyond their immediate class or school setting. Working together outdoors fosters teamwork, shared responsibility and mutual respect strengthening the partnership between our three schools.
